Create an itinerary including Whitetop Mountain
Whitetop Mountain is the second highest independent mountain in the U.S. state of Virginia, after nearby Mount Rogers. It is also the third highest named peak in Virginia, after Mount Rogers and its subsidiary peak, Pine Mountain. It is located at the juncture of Grayson, Smyth, and Washington Counties, and is also within the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area of the Jefferson National Forest. Whitetop was the location of the White Top Folk Festival from 1932 to 1939, with the exception of 1937. Like nearby Mount Rogers, it represents an ecological "island" of flora and fauna commonly found much farther north than Virginia, such as old growth red spruce and other northern softwoods.

Whitetop Mountain is within a conservation area of the same name.

  • Absolutely breathtaking awe inspiring views. Quite a hike if your a bit older. Was told you can see 4 states from there. Mountain and valley views that go on forever. Take a good pair of binoculars

  • Last mile or more after turning OFF the paved road is dirt/gravel. After rains or snow, nearly impassable without SUV; rutted and exposed rocks. I have tent camped there, but if you don't take it.....  more

  • If you're driving a Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla, you might not want to try driving up. The road is rocky, rutted, steep and twisty, with dropoffs on the side in some places and some washouts and gullies. But if you get to the top, and it's a clear day, the view is phenomenal. We got lucky and had a cool, crisp, clear day and I bet we could see 100 miles. It was awesome. One of the most impressive views I've seen in Virginia. In a way, it's good that it's so remote and the road is so rough. I wouldn't want it to become too heavily traveled. For now, there are no conveniences at all up there.
  • Absolutely beautiful! It was like being in another world! The drive up was making me wish we had a 4x4 though. It was worth it though!
