View colorful marine life such as moray eels, manta rays, octopuses, and white-tip reef sharks roaming the reef at the crescent-shaped, partially submerged volcanic Molokini Crater, which was created from an eruption hundreds of thousands of years ago. Snorkel to see creatures closer to the surface, or scuba dive to reach bigger fish in deeper water. The crater also serves as a bird sanctuary, so bring your binoculars if you like birding. If you're here in winter, you might glimpse humpback whales in the waters near the crater. Plan to visit Molokini Crater during your Makena vacation using our convenient Makena day trip tool.

  • I loved snorkeling here. On the way back saw a few whales which added to the experience! I highly recommend snorkeling here.

  • Beautiful, crystal clear water! Lots of species and varieties of fish as well. Many different colors and sizes. We even saw an octopus! The water is about 15ft deep near the shore, so excellent for snorkeling and general swimming. We booked a snorkeling tour here, which was kinda pricey, but ended up being very well worth it. If you book a tour, get tickets several weeks in advance because these regularly sell out.
  • The location is beautiful and am very glad we went! We went for the snorkeling, which I wouldn't recommend for this location in the winter as the variation of species didn't seem to be many. Being volcanic though, I'd imagine they wouldn't be as bright and varied as they would be at coral? It was the most amazing boat ride there and back though, with whales everywhere!!! We even witnessed a whale breach the water! ❤️
