Nestled in a scenic village, Hildene, The Lincoln Family Home offers a glimpse into American history. The former summer home of Robert Lincoln, President Lincoln's eldest son, was completed in 1905 in the Georgian Revival style. The house was restored together with the outbuildings and gardens in 1978 when a non-profit organization bought the property. To learn more about the history of the place, watch the promotional video. Make the most of 19 km (12mi) of walking trails and visit the goat farm, teaching greenhouse, and the wooden Pullman palace car from 1903. My husband and I are history buffs and were happy for the opportunity to visit this site. Well worth the trip. The building and grounds were well-maintained and the welcome center well-run, including a tasteful selection of gifts. We took a guided tour of the indoor portion of the house, which includes many family artifacts. We did find the tour a bit long for standing, as the tour lasts for an hour. The grounds are also worth exploring...amazing vistas of Vermont! My one caution is that this venue is NOT suitable for anyone with respiratory or walking issues...not even with a cane or a walker or wheelchair. It's a rather steep and winding path from the welcome center to the actual house and grounds. But for folks who are sure-footed and able, there is much to learn and to appreciate about this important historical family.
What an amazing history lesson! While Abe himself never had the chance to visit, his very successful son in his own right hosted many other high profile guests. I highly suggest the guided tour to really be immersed in your surroundings. Also make sure you check out the working farm and Pullman train car. Plan to spend 2-3 hours here, even longer if you choose to hike the huge network of trails.
