Roam the 45 sq km (17 sq mi) of Topanga State Park, where a range of microclimates supports a variety of plant and animal life. Hike, bike, or horseback ride along the state park's many trails, which can take you through woodlands of California oak and walnut, savannah grasslands, and ranch areas with large sandstone formations. The park shelters over 140 animal species, including many resident and migratory birds. This was a fantastic hike - especially in the clear, cool weather we had today - at the top of the trail and Eagle Rock, we could see all the way out to Catalina Island and the Palos Verdes...

Only trail I know in Los Angeles that at the top gives simultaneous ocean/downtown views. Some parts of trail offer shade. Hiking shoes highly recommended. Easy to medium difficulty. Takes about 1.5 hours. No dogs allowed on higher trails. Bathrooms & water fountain access at the base -good tasting water I might add. In the late summer you may encounter snakes! Parking is $10 on the lot, but I always find free parking on Sunset Blvd.
