The original frame home built in 1811 consists of a parlor/dining room, kitchen, master bedroom and children's bedroom. The Sherman family added onto the house in 1816, including a parlor and study for (father) Judge Charles Sherman. All of these rooms have been restored to look as they would have when the Sherman's lived here. A brick front was added to the house in 1870 and this victorian parlor is furnished almost completely with furniture owned by the General and Ellen Sherman when they lived in New York City after his retirement. It includes a parlor set originally owned by General Ulysses S. and Julia Grant. One upstairs bedroom houses family memorabilia, another is a re-creation of General Sherman's Civil War field tent which contains several items that he used during the war and a sound and light presentation depicting his passion for the Union. The last room you will visit houses an excellent exhibit of Civil War artifacts, guns and GAR memorabilia.

A nice blend of exhibits that highlight both Sherman's upbringing and his Civil War service. Docents are pleasant and helpful. Even the street outside helps one understand where he came from.

The guided tour was outstanding the curator was extremely knowledgeable about the Sherman family history, the building and General Sherman. The house and grounds are very well kept and the furnishings were authentic to the period. I really enjoyed this tour and learned quite a bit regarding the history of the area and the Sherman family. I highly recommend this to anyone interested in the early history of General Sherman.

Breathtakingly beautiful! This place is a must visit if you are interested in the American Civil War. Not only is it an excellent example of a 19th century home, but the childhood home of the "man who made Georgia howl"! (that's the state, not his wife; her name was Eleanor) 😁 There is an excellent display of items relating to the Civil War wonderfully displayed. The tour folks were friendly and knowledgeable.
