Winding its way along a 4.2 km (2.6 mi) round-trip route, Grotto Falls Parking offers you the chance to walk behind a waterfall--the only opportunity to do so in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The path through old-growth forest makes the hike relatively easy, as it's a straightforward climb aside from some protruding stones and roots. You'll find another waterfall on your way to the trail's namesake. Once you reach the 7.6 m (25 ft) tall Grotto Falls, continue following the trail to find yourself behind a curtain of cascading water. Be sure to wear proper footwear and watch your step, as the surrounding rocks can be extremely slippery due to the constant moisture. • This is one of my favorite hikes in the park with the caveat that you need to arrive at the trailhead at or before daybreak. Why? There are only enough parking spaces for around 15 cars. After that...

  • Beautiful falls! It's a moderate uphill hike to get there, but suitable for all levels. The dirt path is easy to maneuver, wide, and easy to follow. Their are some creeks that you must walk over, but....  more

  • The drive to the trail is tight and gorgeous. Lots of old structures toward the end and some great chances to catch the sun peaking through the trees. The trail itself is nice and steep, giving you some great views down the large drops by the trail. Had to hop on rocks, jump over roots, and sweat my way up the trial. Highly recommend bringing water and comfortable hiking shoes. If you like taking pictures, this the trail to do it. There are lots of steep falls, wildlife running on the trail, a waterfall at the top, and colorful leaves depending on the time of year. Warning: bring a narrow vehicle for the driving trail and parking, and keep an eye out for the large rocks that slightly protrude into the driving space.
  • The walk here was awesome. I came the day before and there was no parking, therefore came back the next day real early in the morning. The weather was cool and there was plenty of parking. The view along the hike was awesome, it was the best. Crossing small streams along the way. The waterfall at the end was so worth the walk. I would certainly do this again if I am back on Gatlinburg.
