Developed from a free art school and gallery started in the 1860s, The Art Institute of Chicago now holds a permanent collection of more than 300,000 artworks. One of its most beloved paintings is George Seurat's Pointillism masterpiece "A Sunday on La Grande Jatte." Exhibits spread over eight buildings include Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art, with additional holdings of Old Masters, European and American decorative arts, and industrial and graphic design. Highlights include paintings by American artists Grant Wood and Edward Hopper, as well as Monet, Renoir, Cezanne, Matisse, van Gogh, and Picasso. The main building itself counts among the city's major landmarks, featuring two bronze lions guarding its main entrance. Check the online calendar for special events and temporary exhibits, which often require separate time-stamped tickets. Save time by purchasing your tickets in advance. Because the museum covers so much ground, it helps to map out exhibits you particularly want to see before you start exploring. The current exhibits are out of this world, seeing these works on display and being able to be so close, very well laid out- a wonderful place to visit!

The museum offers a rich treasure of artistry from diverse cultures, time periods, and artistic specialties. While we have our favorites, we have been inspired, stretched, and educated with every trip. We especially appreciate the attention to art within minority communities, such as a recent quilt and textile special exhibit. As Illinois residents, we have invested in the annual membership in order to visit more frequently and spend more time in individual exhibits. If you're an Illinois resident, watch for days that are free admission for you! If you're just in the area for a day or two, be sure to check the rack of brochures in the ticketing area. These include a flyer that shows where to find some of the classic "must see" pieces during a short visit. Self-guided audio tours are also available to give more background into specific collections. The museum cafes can be a little tricky to find. So ask someone for help. It's worth the effort. The main cafe has delicious and fresh foods, with easy access to a lovely courtyard when weather permits. NOTE: currently closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays!
Massive. Well curated. Great variety. Walks of all life. Good value. I went in with an open mind and not quite sure what to expect. After one hour I had explored just the ground floor. After 3 more hours I had swiftly explored and pondered through the other floors. The modern art area was by far my favorite! If you're unsure about coming, please let this be the sign you were looking for.
