The Gunnison River has been hard at work over the past two million years, carving out the sheer cliffs and towering spires that today make up Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. The canyon stretches for 77 km (48 mi), with the deepest and most striking 19 km (12 mi) section sitting inside the park. Numerous short hiking trails meander along the northern and southern rims of the canyon, making it relatively easy to peer down into the chasm at the river far below. You can also hike to the bottom of the canyon, though these trails are very strenuous and unmaintained.
