Winchester Cathedral is one of the largest cathedrals in England, with a nave that's one of the longest in all of Europe. The blend of Norman and Gothic architecture is a sight to behold. Underneath the ornate arches, a collection of memorials and artwork spans centuries. The haphazard appearance of the stained glass in the west window is a result of the destruction wrought by Oliver Cromwell's forces during the English Civil War. In 1660, the broken glass was gathered up and rearranged randomly. Look for the flooded crypt, where a statue called Sound II looks as if it is floating on top of the water. Note the Russian Orthodox influence of the St. Smithun's Memorial, designed by Sergei Fyodorov. What a stunning place to look around! We spent a good couple of hours here but could have spent longer. There were so many amazing features. £10 per adult which includes all year return.

What a great piece of architecture!!!! An informative volunteer helps tremendously as he leads our group around. I was hoping to see the final resting place for Jane Austen and we were lead to it, both the main one in the flooring and a gold-plated tribute within the wall nearby. The beauty surrounding her, the parishioners, etc., is awe - inspiring! People, please visit the Winchester Cathedral and Winchester itself!! A charming town. Tudor and Georgian architecture everywhere, practically, and that adds to the town's niche.

Stunning architecture, at a awe inspiring scale. The level of craftsmanship is something to admire. I'm agnostic and so the religious appeal was lost on me personally, but even so it's definitely worth a visit! Try to time you're visiting in the morning if possible to take full advantage of the morning sun through the stained glass.
