Create an itinerary including Saffron Walden Museum
Saffron Walden Museum is one of the oldest purpose-built museums in the country. Our family-friendly museum explores the archaeology, natural history and social history of north-west Essex and the wider world.

With a packed programme of special exhibitions, events and activities throughout the year, as well as nine permanent galleries, there's always something to see and do!

Set in quiet grounds next to the ruins of the twelfth-century Walden Castle, just minutes away from the historic market town of Saffron Walden, the museum is the perfect place to explore our district.

  • This place is well worth a look very interesting indeed and much bigger than I thought . I didn't allow myself enough time to see it all properly and shall have to return . The staff are very welcoming and friendly . For a local museum the information and displays are amazing . Only one section is exclusively about Saffron Walden which is very interesting but it takes you on a trip through time and Continents . I came especially to see the Anglo Saxon gold ring but was excited to see a coin of Harold Godwinson . But there is much Much more here most enjoyable . But remember allow a bit more time than I did .
  • This museum is really great. It shows what can be achieved by local people chronicling the history of their local area. I've visited here several times over about a decade. It never disappoints, it isn't expensive to get in unlike some places and you'll spend several hours here learning things about the local area. You can also access the ruins of Walden Castle in the museum grounds.
