In addition to serving as the cathedral church for the diocese of Oxford, Christ Church Cathedral is one of the largest colleges of the University of Oxford. Traditionally considered the most aristocratic college of its university, the institution has produced thirteen British prime ministers, equal to the number produced by all 45 other Oxford colleges combined. John Locke, John Wesley, Robert Peel, William Gladstone, and W.H. Auden studied here, to name just a few notable alumni. Throughout its history, the college’s world-famous Cathedral Choir has attracted many distinguished composers and organists, with many award-winning recordings to its credit. Guided tours of the site’s historic buildings and its well-known art collection are available weekly. Personalized tours, tailored to individual interests, can also be arranged. Evensong was a deeply spiritual event in this atmospheric building. You can feel the history seeping through the walls as you sit and pray by candlelight. Beautiful singing in an awe inspiring setting.

Unfortunately, owing to the Church of England's political response to 'covid', we were unable to visit the chapel of Christ Church Oxford (despite the fact that we were visiting the Dean). The chapel is unique in that it is also the cathedral of the Bishop of Oxford. It also features a n unusual 'pendant' fan-vault; similar to that in the Henry VII chapel of Westminster Abbey. Whilst it is one of England's smallest cathedrals, it's also one of the most historic: and its proximity to the College's art gallery, makes it doubly worth a visit.
