In addition to serving as the cathedral church for the diocese of Oxford, Christ Church Cathedral is one of the largest colleges of the University of Oxford. Traditionally considered the most aristocratic college of its university, the institution has produced thirteen British prime ministers, equal to the number produced by all 45 other Oxford colleges combined. John Locke, John Wesley, Robert Peel, William Gladstone, and W.H. Auden studied here, to name just a few notable alumni. Throughout its history, the college’s world-famous Cathedral Choir has attracted many distinguished composers and organists, with many award-winning recordings to its credit. Guided tours of the site’s historic buildings and its well-known art collection are available weekly. Personalized tours, tailored to individual interests, can also be arranged. Incredibly unprofessional of the staff working there to not mention when we were buying tickets that some parts of the building will be unavailable to see due to exams taking place.

Evensong was a deeply spiritual event in this atmospheric building. You can feel the history seeping through the walls as you sit and pray by candlelight. Beautiful singing in an awe inspiring setting.

Like all of Oxford this is a beautiful cathedral and college, but the admission fee is not worth it any longer. There’s plenty other colleges with fees under £5 that actually let you walk around and explore! As a tourist, unless you really wanna see the Harry Potter staircase, it’s not worth it.
