Ruthven Barracks
Ruthven Barracks (), near Ruthven in Badenoch, Scotland, are the best preserved of the four barracks built in 1719 after the 1715 Jacobite rising. Set on an old castle mound, the complex comprises two large three-storey blocks occupying two sides of the enclosure, each with two rooms per floor. The barracks and enclosing walls were built with loopholes for musket firing, and bastion towers were built at opposite corners. Destroyed by Jacobites following their retreat after the Battle of Culloden in 1746, the Barracks ruins are maintained as a scheduled monument by Historic Environment Scotland. They are accessible at all times without entrance charge. Before you head to Newtonmore, plan trip itinerary details with our user-friendly Newtonmore travel route planner, to make sure you see all that Newtonmore has to offer, including Ruthven Barracks.

Unbelievable, this structure was three floors high in it's day, amazing construction skills for that era, still so solid still, having been perched on this hill for hundreds of years getting battered.... more

A remarkable remnant of the policing of the Highlands in the 18th century, the barracks are stark and stunning. A simple ruin with no charge, toilets or visitor centre, but with a wonderful location..... more

Fascinating site with lots of useful information plaques to explain what everything was. One note of caution is the prison cell. It’s a pit at the rear left corner of the barracks. There’s no warning that a child running about could fall in. My dog charged in and I found her looking confused as to how she was going to get herself out again, no harm done, but might have been different if a child had fallen in.

Stark reminder of how the English maintained their occupation of Scotland after the Jacobite uprisings. It's well worth hunting down the abandoned villages resulting from the clearances to understand some of the darker aspects of British history.
