At St Mary de Crypt Church, visit the classroom of one of the first Tudor grammar schools and the grave of the creator of Sunday schools, Robert Raikes. Since its founding in the 12th century, the church has played an important role in the lives of its parishioners. See the renaissance pulpit from which the 18th-century Evangelist George Whitfield--who brought Methodism to America--preached for the first time. The altar space features a medieval fresco depicting the magi bearing gifts. Apart from the church and the crypt, you can also tour the ringing chamber; the bell tower houses eight 18th-century bells. • I came here to learn more about the church and it’s relationship in providing Sunday School for children. I found so much more. The guides were so very helpful and were eager to share their knowledge.

  • Visited while exploring the area. Lovely hot sunny day and sat in the gardens along with others having a picnic lunch. Watch out for the seagulls though if you want to keep your food !

  • Formally the temple of Jupiter (but that was when the Romans were here). It had a make over in the middle ages and they did a pretty good job. The old school room (attached) does good coffee and cakes. I am told that there are taichi classes.
  • Beautiful historic church, lots of helpful volunteers who will tell you all about the rich history of this building. Special for me as I was christened here.
