This collection of underground alleyways features buildings dating back to period of the Plague, and gives you a glimpse of Edinburgh life hundreds of years ago. Take a tour with a guide in period dress who will recount the close's history, share its associated ghost stories and myths, and bring you into a handful of homes left in their original condition. Named for Mary King, a famous local fabric trader and seamstress in the 1630s, the area was open to the sky before the city built over it and put it beneath street level. • This was such a great way to spend an hour. The history and information was fascinating and we really enjoyed being underneath the streets.

  • took this tour about 3 weeks ago and did not regret! the place is well maintained and buzzing with history. our tour guide Katie M was enthusiastic and engaging throughout. would definitely recommend booking in advance though. the only reason i am not giving 5 stars is since photography is not allowed (which is understandable), the official photo should be free, but is priced at around £10.
  • Amazing visit here! Fascinating trip with lots of great information. Our guide was brilliant. She really had all our family listening to every word. Thank you so much Becca. You really brought the experience to life. Would definitely recommend coming here for a visit!
