The capital of Lithuania, Vilnius, boasts an impressive medieval quarter--one of the continent's largest and a World Heritage Site with almost 2,000 historical buildings.
Get out of town with these interesting Vilnius side-trips: Trakai (Angelu Kalva & Trakai Island Castle Museum). Kaunas — 1 night

Situated between the Neris and Nemunas rivers, Kaunas is known for its old town, which, though smaller than the capital's, is in much better condition.
Kick off your visit on the 3rd (Fri): take in the spiritual surroundings of Pazaislis Monastery, contemplate the long history of Sugihara House, then examine the collection at National M. K. Ciurlionis Art Museum, then step into the grandiose world of Kaunas Castle, and finally visit Old Town.

Traveling by car from Vilnius to Kaunas takes 1.5 hours. Alternatively, you can take a train; or take a bus. Expect a daytime high around 24°C in June, and nighttime lows around 11°C. Cap off your sightseeing on the 3rd (Fri) early enough to go by car to Merkine.

Merkinė is a town in the Dzūkija National Park in Lithuania, located at the confluence of the Merkys and Nemunas rivers. Start off your visit on the 4th (Sat): explore the striking landscape of Dzūkija National Park and then take in panoramic vistas at Merkine Observation Tower.
