Takayama — 4 nights

Hidden high up in the Japanese Alps, Takayama remained largely cut off from the rest of Japan for centuries, allowing the local culture to grow in relative isolation.
Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Takayama Jinya and Hikaru Museum. There's more to do: wander the streets of Sanmachi Suji and see the interesting displays at Lion Dance Ceremony Exhibition Hall (Shishi-Kaikan).

You can fly from Tokyo to Takayama in 2.5 hours. Other options are to drive; or take a train. While traveling from Tokyo, expect little chillier days and about the same nights in Takayama, ranging from highs of 9°C to lows of 3°C. You will leave for Yamagata on the 14th (Wed).
