Culebra — 2 nights

With much of Culebra a nature refuge, the tropical island has been protected from overdevelopment, chain hotels, and the cruise set.
You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Culebrita and Scuba & Snorkeling. The adventure continues: kick back and relax at Playa Zoni, tour the pleasant surroundings at Playa Carlos Rosario, step off the mainland to explore Culebra National Wildlife, and see the interesting displays at Museo Historico de Culebra.

Prepare for much hotter weather when traveling from Melbourne in July: high temperatures in Culebra hover around 90°F and lows are around 80°F. Isla de Vieques — 5 nights

For sixty years until 2003, most of the Isla de Vieques was closed off to the public, with the US Navy using the island's beaches and surrounding waters for drills and testing of new military machinery, such as bombs.
Explore hidden gems such as Playa Caracas and Balneario Sun Bay. And it doesn't end there: stroll through Playa La Chiva, take in the waterfront at Mosquito Pier, enjoy the sand and surf at Playa Media Luna, and take a pleasant ride with a tour on horseback.

A seaside playground in the Caribbean, Rincon was a small agricultural and fishing town until it hosted the 1968 World Surfing Championship.

Ponce — 3 nights

Ponce is both a city and a municipality in the southern part of Puerto Rico. You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at River Rafting & Tubing and Museo de Arte de Ponce. Change things up with a short trip to Bosque Estatal de Guanica in Guanica (about 44 minutes away). There's more to do: head off the coast to Isla de Caja de Muertos and take in the spiritual surroundings of Cathedral of our Lady of Guadaloupe.

Founded by the Spanish in 1521, San Juan is the oldest city under U.S. jurisdiction and one of the oldest in the Americas.
You'll discover tucked-away gems like Paseo de la Princesa and Reserva Natural de Humacao. You'll find plenty of places to visit near San Juan: Playa Mar Chiquita (in Manati) and Arecibo (Aventura Cueva Ventana & Cueva del Indio).
