San Francisco, USA to Chitose is an approximately 17.5-hour combination of flight and car. The time zone changes from Pacific Standard Time to Japan Standard Time, which is usually a 17 hour difference. Traveling from San Francisco in May, things will get a bit cooler in Chitose: highs are around 62°F and lows about 43°F. On the 4th (Wed), you're off to Hakodate.

Hakodate is known for sightseeing, nature, and historic sites. Your trip includes some of its best attractions: take your sightseeing to a higher altitude at Mount Hakodate, hunt for treasures at Hakodate Morning Market, stop by Kanemori Red Brick Warehouse, and don't miss a visit to Hachimanzaka.

Traveling by flight from Chitose to Hakodate takes 2.5 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or take a train. Traveling from Chitose in May, you can expect nighttime temperatures to be somewhat warmer in Hakodate, with lows of 50°F. On the 9th (Mon), you're off to Noboribetsu.

Noboribetsu — 3 nights

Perhaps the island's best-known hot spring resort, Noboribetsu has a long history of tourism.
Venture out of the city with trips to Showashinzan (in Sobetsu-cho) and Cape Chikyu (in Muroran). Next up on the itinerary: take in the dramatic natural features at Jigokudani, take in the natural beauty of Oyunumagawa Natural Footbath, get in on the family fun at Noboribetsu Date Historic Village, and get to know the resident critters at Noboribetsu Bear Park.

Sapporo — 4 nights

A modern, bustling city known for its beer brewery, Sapporo attracts millions of visitors with its Snow Festival, during which elaborate ice and snow sculptures are exhibited all over town.
Get out of town with these interesting Sapporo side-trips: Otaru (Otaru Museum, Bank of Japan & Otaru Canal). There's much more to do: stroll around Odori Park, contemplate the long history of Sapporo Clock Tower, look for gifts at Daimaru Fujii Central, and get engrossed in the history at Historical Village of Hokkaido (Kaitaku-no Mura).

The northernmost city in the country, Wakkanai experiences constant exposure to the elements, with windy and snow-covered winters perhaps its main claim to fame on a national level.
Wakkanai is known for sightseeing, parks, and shopping. Your trip includes some of its best attractions: don't miss a visit to Soya Misaki, hike along Wakkanai Footpath Wakkanai Park Hyosetsu no Mon Course, head outdoors with Soya Hill Periglacial Landforms, and stroll around Wakkanai Park.

You can fly from Sapporo to Wakkanai in 2.5 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or take a train. Traveling from Sapporo in May, plan for slightly colder nights in Wakkanai, with lows around 48°F. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 19th (Thu) so you can go by car to Rebun-cho.

Rebun-cho — 2 nights

Kick off your visit on the 19th (Thu): take in panoramic vistas at Momodai Nekodai Observatory, then look for gifts at Shima no Hito Rebun Island Honten, then get great views at Sukoton Cape, and finally make a trip to Sky cape. Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the next day: make a trip to Cape Gorota, make a trip to Kita no Canaria Park, and then take your sightseeing to a higher altitude at Mt. Rebun.

Drive from Wakkanai to Rebun-cho in 3 hours. Expect a daytime high around 56°F in May, and nighttime lows around 48°F. Wrap up your sightseeing by early afternoon on the 21st (Sat) to allow enough time to travel to Asahikawa.

Perched on the confluence of four rivers and surrounded by green hills, Asahikawa combines a modern city experience with the pristine nature nearby.

And it doesn't end there: get to know the resident critters at Asahiyama Zoo, experience rural life at Ueno Farm, examine the collection at Otokoyama Sakezukuri Museum, and make a trip to Asahikawa Station.
