Built on a desolate swamp as a showcase capital of Imperial Russia, this grand city has certainly lived up to the expectations of its founder, Tsar Peter the Great.
Do your shopping at Nevsky Prospekt and Tretyakov's Gallery. Get outdoors at Eco Path and Yelagin Island. Spend the 7th (Tue) exploring nature at National Park Shhuchye Lake. There's lots more to do: take an in-depth tour of Grand Peterhof Palace and Gardens, stroll around Catherine Palace and Park, contemplate the long history of Palace Square, and see the interesting displays at Russian Museum.

Step out of the city life by going to Yuryevskaya Cave and Blue Lakes. Popular historic sites such as Kazan Kremlin and Bauman Street (Kazansky Arbat) are in your itinerary. Get out of town with these interesting Kazan side-trips: City Lake (in Zelenodolsk) and Raifa Lake (in Raifa). Next up on the itinerary: take in the exciting artwork at Gallery-Workshop of Zaitsev, pause for some serene contemplation at Annunciation Cathedral, contemplate the waterfront views at Nizhniy Kaban Lake, and shop like a local with Kazan Art Gallery.
