Pearl of the Adriatic

Take a break from the city and head to The Cave "Grotta Gigante" and Rilke Trail. Step out of Trieste with an excursion to Palazzo Meizlik in Aquileia--about 50 minutes away. There's still lots to do: make a trip to Piazza dell'Unita d'Italia, see the interesting displays at San Sabba Rice Mill - National Monument, take in the awesome beauty at Trieste and the Trieste Karst, and take in the architecture and atmosphere at Saint Giusto Cathedral.

Rome to Trieste is an approximately 3-hour flight. You can also take a train; or drive. When traveling from Rome in August, plan for little chillier days and about the same nights in Trieste: temperatures range from 34°C by day to 23°C at night. Cap off your sightseeing on the 7th (Mon) early enough to go by car to Cividale del Friuli.
