Red Town

Reminiscent of the height of the bourgeoisie and retaining much of its medieval architecture, Sibiu is Romania's cultural gem.
Get some cultural insight at Muzeul Astra and Cetatea Alba Iulia. Popular historic sites such as Coltesti Castle Ruins and Turnul Sfatului (The Tower of the Council) are in your itinerary. Change things up with these side-trips from Sibiu: Sebes Evangelical Lutheran Church (in Sebes), Scarisoara Ice Cave (in Garda de Sus) and Catedrala Reintregirii Neamului (in Alba Iulia). There's much more to do: don't miss a visit to Big Square (Piata Mare), contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Lutheran Evangelical Cathedral & Tower, explore the historical opulence of Slimnic Citadel, and pause for some serene contemplation at Biserica Evanghelică Fortificată.

Durham, UK to Sibiu is an approximately 10.5-hour flight. You can also do a combination of car and train; or do a combination of car and ferry. Due to the time zone difference, you'll lose 2 hours traveling from Durham to Sibiu. Traveling from Durham in November, plan for little chillier nights in Sibiu, with lows around 0°C. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 5th (Tue) so you can go by car to Sighisoara.

As a World Heritage Site, Sighisoara is visited mostly for its fortified Old Town surrounded entirely by city walls.
Satisfy your inner culture vulture at Centrul Istoric Sighisoara and Art & Crafts. Deepen your sense of the past at sights like The Fortified Church of Biertan and Saxon Church. Get out of town with these interesting Sighisoara side-trips: Haaz Rezso Museum (in Odorheiu Secuiesc) and Izvoare (Ivo Wildlife Park & Icelandic Horses Riding Ranch). Next up on the itinerary: look for all kinds of wild species at Breite Ancient Oak Tree Reserve, examine the collection at Torture Museum, make a trip to Sighisoara Clock Tower, and take in the architecture and atmosphere at Church on the Hill.

You can drive from Sibiu to Sighisoara in 2 hours. Alternatively, you can take a train; or take a bus. Expect a daytime high around 2°C in December, and nighttime lows around -4°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 9th (Sat) early enough to drive to Brasov.

Brasov — 4 nights

With the dramatic Carpathian Mountains as backdrop, Brasov is the largest city in a region of mountain resorts.
Your cultural itinerary includes sights like Bran Castle (Dracula's Castle) and Black Church (Biserica Neagra). Get some historical perspective at Rasnov Citadel and Fortified Church of Harman. Step out of Brasov to go to Sanpetru and see Casa Dinozaurilor Pitici, which is approximately 5h 15 min away. There's still lots to do: make a trip to Piaka Sfatului, make a splash at Paradisul Acvatic, steep yourself in history at Peasant Fortified Church at Prejmer, and get a sense of history and politics at Casa Sfatalui (City Hall).

You can drive from Sighisoara to Brasov in 2 hours. Other options are to take a bus; or take a train. Finish your sightseeing early on the 13th (Wed) to allow enough time to travel back home.
