Satisfy your inner culture vulture at St. Stephen's Cathedral and Hofburg. Visit Belvedere Palace and St. Michael's Church for their historical value. Melk, a small town of about 5,000, hugs the south side of the Danube.
On the 4th (Mon), steep yourself in history at Melk Abbey, look for gifts at Wein & Wachau, and then take in the architecture and atmosphere at Stadtpfarrkirche Maria Himmelfahrt. On your second day here, step into the grandiose world of Burgruine Duernstein, then take in the architecture and atmosphere at Pfarre Krems St. Veit, and then take in the exciting artwork at Dominikanerkirche.

You can take a train from Vienna to Melk in 1.5 hours. Another option is to drive. Traveling from Vienna in July, expect a bit warmer with lows of 24°C in Melk. Finish your sightseeing early on the 5th (Tue) so you can drive to Hallstatt.
