Sapporo — 2 nights

A modern, bustling city known for its beer brewery, Sapporo attracts millions of visitors with its Snow Festival, during which elaborate ice and snow sculptures are exhibited all over town.
On the 21st (Thu), wander the streets of Susukino, then take in the architecture and design of Hokkaido University Sapporo Campus, then steep yourself in history at Former Hokkaido Government Office Building, and finally walk around Odori Park. Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the 22nd (Fri): get into the urban bustle at Sapporo Underground Shopping Centre Aurora Town, then don't miss a visit to Sapporo Clock Tower, and then hit the slopes at Okurayama Lookout.

Otaru to Sapporo is an approximately 1-hour car ride. You can also take a train; or take a bus. Expect a daytime high around 68°F in September, and nighttime lows around 63°F. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 23rd (Sat) so you can go by car to Biei-cho.

Biei-cho — 2 nights

Famous for scenic views of vast fields, wide meadows, and gently rolling hills against the backdrop of the Taisetsu mountain range, Biei-cho offers a picture-prefect setting for a pleasant countryside vacation.
Kick off your visit on the 23rd (Sat): take a memorable drive along Patchwork no Michi, then visit Seven Stars Tree, and then take in nature's colorful creations at Zerubunoka Atomunooka. On your second day here, admire the sheer force of Shirahige Falls, look for all kinds of wild species at Shirogane Blue Pond, and then stroll through Shikisai no Oka.
