Railway Museum (Het Spoorwegmuseum)
Housed in a historical former train station, Railway Museum (Het Spoorwegmuseum) documents the history of the industry and its development in the Netherlands. Visit the museum and travel through time from the origins of train technology onward through the golden age of rail at the turn of the 20th century to the present (especially relevant given the Netherlands' extensive train network). A number of exhibits display historical train cars in addition to full-scale replicas contained within the grounds of the museum as well as within the halls of the station building itself. Don't miss getting an up-close look at the last steam locomotive to be used in the country, Holland's first electric train, and the recreation of the "The Eagle"--the nation's very first locomotive from 1839. Keep in mind that you can access the museum via an hourly train service from Utrecht's central station. Put Railway Museum (Het Spoorwegmuseum) at the forefront of your travel plans using our Utrecht road trip site.

Great museum about the history of the railroad in the Netherlands. The exhibition is extremely large and is ideal for children and adults. I especially liked the historic station building and the various interactive elements. What was great was that I was also able to enter various carriages. Visitors should plan four hours for the exhibition. The on-site team was extremely friendly and helpful. Tickets can be purchased at the ticket office or in advance online.

This is a brilliant destination, whether for a family or an individual visitor. So much to see, with an excellent cafeteria to have a break from walking around. The knowledgeable staff are approachable, and they share their expertise freely. A great place to spend 2-4 hours!
