With a shape often compared to a swan or a harp, Erasmus Bridge reflects the industrial yet creative character of the city. It stands 139 m (456 ft) tall and 802 m (2,631 ft) long above the Nieuwe Maas River, and connects the north and south sides of the city. Featured in Hollywood movies and seen in the Tour de France, the asymmetrical bridge is an icon of Rotterdam. You can cross by car or bus, or on foot or by bicycle. Stop along the way to observe the panorama of this flat city, dotted with some bulky industrial buildings. • I think this is the most iconic symbol of the city. I didn't really know Rotterdam before visiting it and except Erasmus, this is the first thought I had when I heard Rotterdam during a conversation.....  more

  • Quite crowded during peak hours. Constructed to facilitate the orchestration of traffic flows, the bridge design is inspired by, and in turn reflects, the industrial character of Rotterdam, adding to the narrative of the city. The right side is more scenic. The bridge operates as the last crossing point between the Northern and Southern areas of the city, whilst its structural scale and design articulation has become a distinctive landmark within the surrounding skyline.
  • Erasmus Bridge is a wonderful sight as you approach it. It has the elegance of a swan. While in the area it is well worth taking a water taxi to visit the Rotterdam port, a city in itself.
