Zuiderzeemuseum displays the history of the people who lived along the shore of the Zuiderzee before it transformed into the IJsellmeer. For centuries the Zuiderzee operated as a key shipping port. However, in 1932 the Afsluitdijk, or IJsellmeer Barrier Dam, closed off the saltwater inlet known as Zuiderzee, and turned it into the freshwater lake known as IJsellmeer. The open-air museum covers 6 hectares (15 acres) and presents a way of life that has since disappeared. Explore the small fishing village with authentic buildings from the region, including a church, fish-curing shed, mill, cheese warehouse, shops, and homes. Visit the indoor portion of the museum to see the largest collection of wooden ships in the country, as well as photography and traditional costumes. It was a pleasant day out, the weather was ideal, we took the boat from the parking lot to the museum and on the way back we visited the indoor museum and walked to the pickup by the train station and took the boat back to the parking lot. It is amazing how many people called these little houses home. I think going to a place like this reminds us how good we have it! The people were friendly and ready to explain their chosen specialty. I am not a museum lover, I go because my husband likes it. Two hours would have been enough for me, four was not enough for him.

Really enjoyed this piece of old Holland brought back to life! Fascinating history of the area. It’s mainly outside so choose nice weather! Very tired feet afterwards, so proof of a great day out.
