Topped with the statue of St. Michael slaying the dragon, Michalska Brana represents the oldest preserved part of the city's medieval fortifications. Built around 1300, the gate acquired its present appearance during an 18th-century reconstruction. Follow the marked historical crown path through the gate and notice a disk with a compass pointing in the directions of the world's major cities. The bridge on the other side of the passage arches over the last remaining section of a medieval moat. Visit the clock tower to see the exhibition of weapons there and climb to the sixth-floor balcony for vistas of the old town, castle, and surrounding landscapes. Bratislava is a lovely place on summer and well worth a visit. We arrived by boat which is even better. St Michael's Gate is entirely encased in scaffolding at the moment and is closed to visitors but there's plenty more to see and the short climb up to the castle is well worth the slog for the view alone. Lots of shady cafes for ice cream coffee cake or larger meals.

Fun exploring the old town. I didn't expect there were a lot of things to do and wished we stayed the whole day here. We just took a quick stop here from our roadtrip; nonetheless, it was a good break from a long drive.
