Samara Oblast encompasses the southeastern part of Russia's European territory and includes the heavily industrialized region along the Volga River. Covered with coniferous and broadleaved forests, the region rose to prominence during World War II, when plentiful oil deposits made it attractive for the development of a new industrial area far from the war front.
