An oasis of silence and spirituality, Vysoko-Petrovskiy Monastery was probably founded in the 14th century by St. Peter of Moscow. Once part of an important defensive ring constructed around the city, the monastery complex contains several churches and other structures. The onion-domed main church, dedicated to the Virgin of Bogolyubovo, dates from the 1600s. Arguably the complex's most famous building is a brick cathedral with a shingle roof, built by Peter the Great's mother in the 17th century. Take a guided tour with a monastery official to learn about the history of the complex and see area's usually closed to the general public.
