Chindiei Tower (Sunset Tower)
The Chindia Tower (Romanian: Turnul Chindiei) is a tower in the Curtea Domnească monuments ensemble in Târgoviște, Romania, built in the 15th century. The tower was begun during the second reign of Prince Vlad III the Impaler over Wallachia and took its final form during the 19th century. It initially had a military purpose, but during its history, it has been used as a guard point, a fire spotter, and for storing and protecting the state treasury. Between 1847 and 1851, the Chindia Tower was completely restored by Gheorghe Bibescu who added 5 metres (16 ft) to its height. The building in its current form has a height of 27 metres (89 ft) and a diameter of 9 metres (30 ft).Use our Targoviste trip planning app to visit Chindiei Tower (Sunset Tower) on your trip to Targoviste, and learn what else travelers and our writers recommend seeing nearby.

As a monument the tower now houses an exhibition of documents, weapons and objects which belonged to Vlad the Impaler. Today the tower is administered by the National Museum Curtea Domnească.

I was there with my whole family, 4 people. The View îs charming and atractive. Staff îs very polite and proffesional, willing to explain everything, especially Mrs. Minodora Carciumaru. Many thanks!

The tower itself looks really good as it has been renovated, even though it’s not that tall you can see the whole city from it’s top. The park surrounding it is really beautiful. If you have small children you can take them to the city’s zoo which is a 5 minute walk from the tower.

The impressive tower built in the 15th century, and later restored in the 19th century, is most likely the most famous landmark of Targoviste. First used as a bell tower, then a watchtower and later as a clock tower, the 3 flights of stairs to reach the top makes the view of the whole city quite beautiful. The entrance fee to the Old Courtyard was only 12 lei and the tower comes in the ticket.
