Piaka Sfatului, Brasov

Lined with red-roofed medieval merchant houses evoking the region's German heritage, Piaka Sfatului shows off Black Church, the town's most prominent landmark. You'll find a pillory in the middle of the square, where witches and other misfits were once scorned and punished. The square was named after the 15th-century council house, which is home to the town's history museum. The ancient watchtower, which today is part of the main building, is even older.
