Gamle Stavanger
Get a taste of Norway's past at Gamle Stavanger, the city's historical district and home to one of the largest collections of preserved wooden homes in the region. Dating mainly from the 18th and early 19th centuries, these Stavanger homes characterize the architectural style that once existed nationwide. The cobbled streets wind between whitewashed historical homes, numbering 173 in all. Discover the multitude of craft stores and shops that now give life to the area. Be sure to stop by the local canning museum, which demonstrates the inner workings of a typical factory in the neighborhood at the dawn of the 20th century. A totally pleasant district with small, quaint houses that were nearly destroyed. Nice gardens dot the area. Very picturesque, including views of the adjacent harbor.
