Ouchijuku
Step back into the Edo period during a venture around Ouchijuku, a historic post station now located within a larger town. Post stations were built to provide travelers transporting goods across the country with somewhere to stay and rest, and the squat wooden buildings have a pleasing aesthetic, nestled together among the mountainous landscape. Take the time to admire the thatched roofs of the well-preserved buildings, and pop in to see what they now contain, with many of the buildings now open to the public in the form of museums, cafes, souvenir shops, and restaurants. Work out when and for how long to visit Ouchijuku and other Shimogo-machi attractions using our handy Shimogo-machi trip itinerary builder.

Beautiful snow scenes, delicious Green onion soba noddles, warm, fresh and with reasonable price! Lovely village covered by snow feels like a wonderland! Cookies are so yummy and so so crunchy, with soy sauce, miso, pepper, sugar flavors and the sizes are bigger than a human face! You should try some. Observatory is like 5min walk from the entrance, you must go up to see the entire village, quite, tranquil and nice! However, stairs are extremely slippery, even with ropes and rails are still.... can’t avoid falling off. Gotta be careful!

On this east northern Japan trip, we go to ouch-juku twice and very lucky to see the snow view in the second time. You can see very traditional house and village here. Just like a movie scene. We go there by rent car. Please beware the google directions will lead you through a mountain pathway, the road on the mountain is no people, so the road is snowy, slipping and dangerous. We suggest if you want to drive by yourself, don’t go through the mountain.
