Step into the surreal world of Japanese manga at The Mizuki Shigeru Road, a playful street dedicated to the life and work of Shigeru Mizuki, one of the country's greatest manga artists. An 800 m (2,624 ft) arcade decorated with 153 bronze statues of the artist's fantasy creations allow you to weave your way around many quirky shops selling sweets and souvenirs. At night, the statues create an eerie sight, lit up to recreate the spirit world. Put The Mizuki Shigeru Road on your schedule, and learn what else deserves a visit by using our Sakaiminato tour planner.

In Sakaiminato you can feel real Japan. Small town with only 30.000 inhabitans. There are not a lot things to see. But main street is charming.

We are a senior couple, never heard of the place or Mizuki Shigeru, but you don't need to know, just go and enjoy yourself, and watching others. The statues are so imaginative, even the stone...

Date visited: 2022/04/29 I came at the end of the day (around 6pm) so it was fairly deserted. Not many people walking around and majority of the businesses were closing or already closed. Definitely recommend coming earlier in the day so you can properly experience the Mizuki Shigeru Road. I did walk all the way down the road and back up again to see all the statues. It was really fun and interesting! I went here only because I knew it was a famous spot in Japan -- I knew nothing about Gegege no Kitaro before coming. At the beginning of the road by the train station, there are some statues with explanations in English that give you a brief intro to the story. I'm sure I could have learned more if I'd come during business hours. I didn't even make it to the visitor's center/museum sadly.

On the shopping street "Mizuki Shigeru Road", which was born in 1993, is a yokai road that runs for about 800 meters from Sakaiminato Station to the Mizuki Shigeru Memorial Museum. , there are a total of 177 bronze statues of yokai created by Mizuki, such as "Eyeball Oyaji" and "Kitaro" I enjoy taking a photo so much.
