Admire the collection of Japanese and Western art at Shimane Art Museum. Designed by Kiyonori Kikutake in 1999, the modern museum covers a total area of 12,500 sq m (134,549 sq ft). See Hokusai's prints, Hiroshige's woodblock prints, and various archeological objects next to Corot, Sisley, Monet, and Gauguin. Views from the museum's scenic location next to Lake Shinji perfectly complement the art. Bring your foreign resident card or passport for a discount on the admission fee. • The architecture of the museum is impressive. Just the building itself is a work of art. They've created a massive space for admiring art work. It's also an ideal location to view the spectacular...

  • I've been to this museum more than 5 times now and I keep coming back! The exhibition is switched up from time to time, so I see something new every time I go. This time I visited to see the special exhibition featuring the works of Hokusai. The museum received a collection of Hokusai works, extensive enough that they will keep researching it for around 7 years apparently. The museum is right next to a huge lake, and it's known as a sunset-watching spot. The large grounds around it are a good spot to go to with children.
  • The art museum sits on the side of Lake Shinji, so the location is beautiful but the building is too. The permanent collections are housed on the second floor and it's not a huge space but there are some Hokusai woodblock prints, including several of the 36 Views of Fuji series. If you buy a ticket for a special exhibition, this will allow you to view the permanent exhibitions as well. There is rooftop terrace with views over the lake and lakeside is a well known photo spot for sunset. There are also artworks that can be viewed for free beside the lake. Free onsite parking available, but this is limited. Well worth a visit.
