Listen to daily chants and drums and follow a morning fire ritual at Chishaku-in, the head temple of the Shingon Buddhist Chizan sect. Famous for its refined "fusuma" paintings of landscapes on the walls of the main chamber, which have been declared a national treasure, the temple also has a meticulous pond garden amid fragrant flowers; you can admire perfectly arranged stones and gravel at the garden. Founded in the 14th century, the temple provides a quiet, less touristy spot in which you can meditate. Check out the small museum, which displays an architecture exhibit, when you visit the temple, which is only a 10-minute walk from Shichijo station.
