Escape to a sanctuary of natural beauty at Koko-en, a collection of Japanese gardens scattered across the grounds of Himeji Castle. Constructed in 1992, these nine gardens reflect different styles of the Edo Period and welcome visitors looking for a peaceful space to unwind. Spread across 3.5 hectares (8.6 acres), the park contains elegant bridges, flower and bamboo gardens, pristine waterfalls, and a ceremonial teahouse where you can enjoy a cup of traditionally brewed matcha or green tea. The gardens are accessed via a short walk from the castle's main entrance. Make Koko-en a part of your Himeji vacation plans using our Himeji day trip planner.

  • I believe we paid 400 yen entrance fee. We went there in an early morning walk from Philosofer's walk. It is one of my favorite temples in Kyoto.

  • A very beautiful place. A must visit during the peak of autumn. It was so convenient to visit since the garden is literally beside the Himeji castle. This place gave me goosebumps because of how beautiful it is.
  • This is the tradicional Japanese garden… beautiful, calm, peaceful… manicured garden and variety of trees and plants. There is a traditional Japanese restaurant (for lunch) and a tea house… really worth to stop by
