The castle, largely intact since its completion in 1622, sits perched on a hilltop overlooking Lake Biwa. Admire the historic building, designated a National Treasure, and climb the stairs to the third floor for panoramic views of the lake and surroundings. While touring the castle premises, you can also pay a visit to the museum to observe an array of relics from the past, or take a walk in the scenic gardens, which boast an ornamental pond and nine bridges. • Huge grounds. Need a lot of time to explore it all. Unfortunately it was raining a lot, so I just viewed it from below. You can take a boat ride around the castle.

  • The biggest castle complex I've visited so far. With the relatively expensive parking fee and beautiful garden for one of several places you should visit, I highly advice to reserve around half of your day here. It is not commercialized like the others so walking in the complex would let you imagine what it may have been going on there during its glory days.
  • Amazing. Five stars, two thumbs up, cannot possibly recommend highly enough. If possible, try to get a guided tour! The history of the castle and technique that went into readying it for battle are fascinating.
