Create an itinerary including Itsukushima Shrine
A World Heritage-listed Shinto temple, Itsukushima Shrine remains best known for its red torii gate, "floating" on the surface of the Inland Sea. The shrine dates back to the 12th century and has undergone several reconstructions over the ages, most recently in the 16th century. Admire the scenic shrine building, which is at its most picturesque at high tide, when both the gate and the structure on stilts appear to be floating on the sea. Take a relaxing walk and explore the surroundings, or enjoy the view from a boat cruise. • Second time I’ve been here and it’s just so beautiful. There’s plenty of cool places to stop and just sit and look at nature or the shrine. Or places to stop and have tea or a beer. The deer are of course lovely to see too. Recommend having a walk up the streets into the mountains a bit and off the beaten path.
  • Sadly the tori gate was still under renovation and covered (not expected to finish till December 2022), but I've waited 3 years to see it and will be returning to home country soon so I went. The shrine itself was beautiful over the water, and so many deer in the area. Though the "picture opportunity" to get the tori gate was a loss, the experience was still worth the effort to see it.
