Hakone Shrine / Kuzuryu Shrine Singu
Tucked away on the forested shores of Lake Ashi, Hakone Shrine / Kuzuryu Shrine Singu stands as one of the nation's major Shinto sites. Founded originally in the 8th century, the complex includes buildings that date back to the 1660s. The grounds feature an array of wooden structures with swooping rooftops and a distinctive black-and-red color scheme, all surrounded by dense cedar woods. Note that many dragons and dragon-like creatures from Japanese mythology adorn the interiors of the shrine's buildings, intended to protect the site from evil spirits. Don't miss the entryway of the main shrine--this red gate, just offshore in the waters of the lake, represents one of the most iconic scenes anywhere in the country. Located in Lake Ashi. It was a nice walk around the area. There was a line to take a picture in front of the shrine, but you have to visit at the exact time of the day, otherwise the sun is behind..... more

Originally established in the year 757, the Nine-Headed-Dragon Shrine [Kuzuryu-jinja] reveres a nine-headed dragon. According to ancient legend, the dragon who lived at the bottom of Lake Ashi demanded a human sacrifice from the local villagers. A monk named Mangan Jyonin saved the villagers by subduing the dragon causing it to renounce its evil ways. The dragon became revered as a dragon king, and these days, a festival is held every year on July 31st to celebrate the nine-headed dragon king.
