Visit Japan's first Catholic convent at Trappistine Monasteries. Established in 1898, construction finished on the current building in 1927, culminating in a distinctly European architectural style, with both Gothic and Romanesque features. A number of information panels around the grounds detail the history of the site and the story of Catholicism in the country, though entrance to the building itself is not permitted. Eighty nuns live a self-sufficient life on the site, selling sweets to make a living, so pick up some of the sweet treats available, including Madeleines and butter candies. • A catholic convent with beautiful grounds to stroll upon. Located on a hill in the eastern part of Hakodate. Bought some famous Trappist cookies from the souvenir shop. Worth a short visit.

  • Peaceful place It is located outside of the city, there is local bus which will take approximately 45 minutes, however their frequency are limited. We arrived late and only stay for 15 minutes
