From Goryokaku Tower you can take in sweeping views of Hakodate and the star-shaped Goryokaku Fort below. This soaring 107 m (351 ft) viewing tower is perched at the edge of the historic fort, which was designed in 1855 to protect the territory of the Tokugawa shogunate from Russian invasion. The fort's star shape allowed for better visibility and more gun emplacements. Today, the grounds serve as a park replete with cherry blossom trees. Use the elevators at the entrance hall to reach the two observatory floors, where an exhibition of figurines demonstrates the history of the area. While recently staying in Hakodate we visited the tower and found out a lot of the history while there, plenty of information boards about. The viewing area up the top is fantastic, you get terrific..... more

Amazing view at the top. Pay 950 to visit the top level is a must. U can have 360 view of the Hakodate area with the mountains as the backdrop. Car park is opposite the tower. So park and walk across the street to the tower entrance. The lift to go up is fast. The view is really great. Highly recommend.

Beautiful view from the tower, you can see the whole city panorama. There are souvenir stores, coffee and food places too. I went during winter, but really want to come back during spring.
