Create an itinerary including Lake Shikotsu
Away from the hustle and bustle of city life, Lake Shikotsu represents one of Japan's deepest bodies of water, offering fine views of a still-active volcano. Formed some 30,000 years ago, the caldera doesn't freeze in the winter, despite the cold northern climate. The eastern shore features hotels and hot spring resorts for tourists, while a nearby canyon shelters rich plant life and over twenty types of moss viewable from an observation deck--an ideal destination for nature lovers. Stroll around the lake's rim or hike up the volcano and enjoy the views over the deserted crater landscape and the glimmering water. Put Lake Shikotsu into our Chitose trip tool to see other points of interest to visit during your vacation in Chitose.

  • Even though the weather was cold and damp, the short drive to the lake is well worth the effort. The Visitors’ Center is fascinating, with plenty of English translations for the exhibits. The views...

  • Was a nice day at Shikotsu Lake. Most of the Snow has melted away from the Winter. Nice view of Mount Eniwa from the Yamasen Railway Bridge 🌉 Was surprised to pay for parking. There's an attendee at the parking lot, to collect payment. 🅿️ use to be free! Well be back next Winter ❄️ for the Snow Sculpture Festival
  • Went there this winter and It was amazing. Breath taking views and beautiful surroundings. Foods were also nice and there was even ice scriptures (with entrance fee). Had a wonderful time.
