A historic entertainment district in Tokyo, Asakusa has been attracting visitors for centuries. The area evolved during the Edo period (17th-19th centuries) as locals opened shops and restaurants catering to the visitors of the many temples in the area. Largely rebuilt after heavy bombing in World War II, today the district contains a number of traditional theaters and Japanese cinemas. Visit the neighborhood's celebrated 7th-century temple, then take a turn along Nakamise--a shopping street of characteristic boxy houses and storefronts that sell souvenirs and traditional, local snacks.
