Tread the path of the lowly prisoner at Abashiri Prison Museum, depicting the lives of Japanese convicts and jailers in the 19th and 20th centuries. Constructed in 1890, the prison sprawls over 22 buildings of cells, sleeping quarters, and work houses. Submerge yourself into the day-to-day life of a prisoner, from the solitary confinement and law court, to the miso and soy agricultural areas for which the prison became known. Rest your feet at the museum restaurant, where you can sit down to a meal called the "Prisoner's Lunch." • An interesting visit especially the main prison building! We spent about an hour here but too bad the restaurant was already closed or would have loved to try the prisoner meal set!

  • This is so much more than just a museum about the prison. It covers quite a bit of Hokkaido history, telling the sad tale of how prisoners were used to help build roads and infrastructure in...

  • I came here in winter, 2020. Just little scared because there's a lot of statue. But, the view is amazing. Beautiful scenery. The museum is so wide.
  • Visit to understand the architecture and the contributions of the initial prisoners from the Meiji period. There is however limited exhibits on the politics of that period.
