Abashiri trip planner

A coastal town with a smattering of things to do, Abashiri has an interesting history and arresting natural scenery. During the Meiji Period, the city became the site of the country's first maximum-security prison, where political prisoners and other convicts were forced to do hard labor, or sit in freezing cells during the harsh winter months.
