Abashiri
A coastal town with a smattering of things to do, Abashiri has an interesting history and arresting natural scenery. During the Meiji Period, the city became the site of the country's first maximum-security prison, where political prisoners and other convicts were forced to do hard labor, or sit in freezing cells during the harsh winter months. Today, the prison functions as a museum, and tops many tours of Abashiri. In cold weather, icebreakers run trips along the ice floes offshore. Make Abashiri central to your Japan travel plans using our Japan online trip planner.
