Medieval Basilica Cateriniana San Domenico dates from 1226, and still contains the original rectangular nave and transverse roof beams--as well as the head and finger of St. Catherine of Siena. Legend has it that her mother begged the Dominicans to bury St. Catherine's body at Siena, and as a compromise they sent only her head. The cathedral's towering transepts and small chapels are home to a plethora of Renaissance frescoes and paintings--including the only genuine portrait of St. Catherine of Siena, by Andrea Vanni. Quite a hike uphill in Siena to reach this Basilica. It is a large church of which the main point of interest is the Chapel of St. Catherine. I was underwhelmed, sad to say.

On the outside, this building is eye catching, ornate and dominating on the hill. Not easy to miss. Beautifully done interior with treasures of the time.

Such a different church to the main Duomo. Its well worth the visit and is still extremely impressive in its own right. The views back over to Siena are also well worth the trip on there own.

It’s a really nice church. Free to enter. And lots of open space. The stained glass I have never seen anything like that before Also there is the preserved head of a saint, and her finger store there that you can view. You are not suppose to take pictures It was nice. The church is beautiful.
