Create an itinerary including Celtic Hypogeum
A descent into Celtic Hypogeum is also a step back in time, through a network of connected caverns whose origin and original use remain mysterious. Situated near the center of the city, the underground historic site encompasses several rooms carved into the rock face. Wandering the corridors and chambers of the hypogeum, you'll notice three masks, their function unknown, as well as benches and wall niches. There are conflicting ideas about the monument's purpose, from Celtic funeral site to a Roman-era prison. Go to tourist information center to gain entry, as the doors may be locked. PutCeltic Hypogeum into our Cividale del Friuli journey maker site and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.

  • Ipogeo Celitco is an amazing place and just one of the reasons to visit Cividale. We stayed at the BnB, Il Rifugio del Monaco, and it was great.

  • Very interesting and diverting (free) dive into history. If you like caves and ancient tombs, this one is for you. You have to get the key at tourist information at Piazza Diacono Paolo.
  • Currently closed, it is only possible to visit a 3D reconstruction of it. The charm of this place is due to the mystery it hides, various hypotheses have been put forward, but no one is yet able to say with certainty what this pre-Roman underground was used for.
