Villa Russiz, Capriva del Friuli

“ VILLA RUSSIZ“ Capriva del Friuli-Gorizia The villa is located in the hills of Capriva del Friuli, its construction began in 1868, to house the counts of La Tour. In style it recalls the castle of Miramare (Trieste), it has an "L" shape with two towers in the main façade and preserves some beautiful original furnished rooms. Currently the castle houses the administrative offices of the Villa Russiz Foundation. Adjacent to the castle is the park with beautiful evergreen trees; during the Great War the park was transformed into a field hospital. On a small hill, opposite the castle, is the Mausoleum of Count Theodor de La Tour, commissioned by his wife Elvina Ritter in memory of her husband. Adjacent to the castle are the cellars built by Count Thedor de La Tour, a farsighted agronomist who understood the value of the land and the climate of these places. Since 2009 the property has become "Villa Russiz Foundation" producing quality wines and winning in 2002 the prestigious "Tre Bicchieri" of the Gambero Rosso Guide. In 2020, together with other companies in Friuli Venezia Giulia, it was awarded again the "Tre Bicchieri" by Gambero Rosso, for white wines. Nice experience, visiting it through the FAI... but overall it seemed a bit neglected, the structures and the park.
