Worth getting an inclusive ticket so you can see this as well as the basilica, crypt and campanile. Anywhere else this would be really interesting, but surrounded by so many marvels it doesn't stand..... more

In Roman times Aquileia was said to be the ninth most important city in the Empire. Only a small part of this small town has been excavated but Roman ruins are everywhere. Very little remains above ground mainly due to the Huns flattening the place in 452 AD.
